A post was merged into an existing topic: Punch list item - Seth’s first buildOn Auction

Happy Wednesday! Congrats on the launch and great job with the website. Easy to navigate and pleasant to look at

I created an account today and noticed a few small UX issues.

  1. The GOODBID $$$ NOW button is triggered on hover (instead of on click)
  2. The only way to close the modal is to refresh the page.

  1. The “Report an issue” link is covered by the “Chat with us ” card. Could be fixed by adding a bit of whitespace at the bottom of the page so it’s able to scroll past?

thanks for this @duncanhamra

the modal has been fascinating to develop. It closes when you type DONATION in the box, but a lot of people miss that.

appreciate the insights. thank you

Thanks for the feedback, @duncanhamra - we’re playing around with the idea of expanding the trigger zone for the modal to a few containers up the tree.

We don’t want to make it an onClick since that runs the risk of messing with the auction bidding dynamics, and yeah to @sethgodin 's point if you type DONATION it closes.

Good callout on the “Chat with us” card!

Hello, GOODBIDS!

This isn’t a bug but it does relate to UX.

First, I want to thank you for creating GOODBIDS. I have been to far too many gala+charity auction events and always leave with the same feeling, like it was a bad date. It started off fine but at the end of the night he got all handsy and it seemed like he wasn’t interested in me, just what he could get from me. Your solution takes that away completely.

I am the person who just ‘won’ the Bob Dylan Slow Train jacket. When the auction started, I was excited that I might actually be able to win something in a charity auction. I set a budget for how high I would go, keeping in mind that every bid is a donation. Note: I have never won an auction. I have always been outbid at the last moment.

I came in at $40. A few days (?) later, someone bid $50. I bid $60. I put a note in my calendar to check back when there was only one day left. Yesterday, I was shocked to see no one had bid! I figured the 8 watchers were waiting for the last minute, which is the typical winning play in a charity auction.

Today, I checked in when I woke up, then again from a field in Kentucky when there was only 1 hour left. I was still the high bidder. The field has poor cell phone reception and I worried my screen wasn’t refreshing, but it was. I set my alarm for 5 minutes to close.

I watched the countdown. I won the jacket. I felt good and bad–good that I had won, but bad that I had donated only $100 to buildOn. Then when I got my receipt, I saw my free bid was applied to the auction and I had won the jacket with a donation of $40.

While having the free bid applied was a nice touch, I didn’t feel good about donating only $40 to buildOn. So, I logged into their website and made a donation.

This brings us to the idea :bulb:: What if there was a button on the “You won!” page that said something like “Give More” and you could enter an additional amount?

Because not-for-profits run so lean, they don’t always have the best “where’s the banana?” click-to-donate buttons. That’s why I think the add-on should come via the GOODBIDS website, not as a link to the organization’s website.

Side note: I remember when Slow Train came out, and the controversy that followed. It feels like this jacket brings me back to a time I had forgotten about, a time that needed a little more love & grace.

Thanks for the reminder, and thanks for the work you do for GOODBIDS and the worthy organizations you serve. :sunflower:

I am so glad you won!

I’ll do the official paperwork on Monday.

it’s in good hands and you’re a good egg.

This might be UX or just a confused user…

I just got this email invoice/receipt for $60, which was the amount of the free bid credit. I thought it was credited, maybe not, and I’m perfectly fine if it isn’t because it goes to buildOn.

I won an auction (yay!) but when I clicked the link to Claim Your Reward from the email, I visited this link and saw this in Chrome and Safari

BUT… if I was already logged in to GoodBids then it put me on a page to checkout as expected.

So, not to solution for y’all…, but I’d expect to a) be put on a log-in page instead of an critical error page without instruction and b) have some language in the email (log-in to claim your reward or under the button 'must be logged in to claim your reward) or something like that.

thanks @bradyjosephson

fortunately, every other winner escaped this circle of doom

the tech team was just adjusting something, they’re aware of the glitch

THANK YOU
